Food Bytes

Some people know that the hubby and I love to eat healthy food, and if any of you have ever tried it, you'll know it's hard to eat healthy on a budget.  But we've gotten our food spending down to between $100 and $150 per month. And no, I don't use coupons on a regular basis. Nothing against coupons, I just rarely find coupons for what we like to eat.

I started on a quick breakdown of what we eat, and then discovered that there would be nothing quick about it, so begins the “Food Bytes” series.  Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll post about different things we buy at the store, and include a couple of favorite recipes along the way.

Meanwhile, I would love feedback from you.  I have readers in major metropolitan areas, like NYC, Minneapolis, and Chicago-land, as well as readers in small towns in Canada, Ohio and North Carolina, and I love the diversity.  Where do you find the best bargains?  What are food items that you are willing to splurge on?  What would you never pay full price for?   How do you feel about natural and organic products?  Do you use coupons often?

Weigh in and let me know!

An Update

Hi!  Just a quick update on life at the Minion Cottage.  Our crazy September is over!! Woohoo!  It was a ton of fun, but super busy. Since I forgot to post a response to my photo question from last month (blond moment)- yes, you were all right.  Stephen, Google Maps doesn't count!  It was on Westlee St. in good ole Lattimore, looking at the railroad tracks.  Since that was such a hit, see if you can figure out this one:

Also, I did clean out our basement, and it looks so good!!  All we need are some heavy duty shelves for putting our containers on, and we will be set!  I'm hoping to do a whole house tour soon, so you will see in on there.

And, I am super, duper excited to announce a new blog series on food and shopping.  I've had a few people ask how we eat healthy on a budget and for recipes, so I will be sharing that very, very soon!

I hope you all are enjoying your autumns as much as I am.  Oh, and go apple picking.  Andrew and I went last weekend (my first time ever!) and had so much fun.  Enjoy!

A Simple Life

Our crazy month of September is finally almost over.  One thing that this month has taught me in many ways through many avenues, is the blessing of simplicity.  We have begun, now that our life is a little less crazy, to reevaluate many things here at the Minion cottage. One of them is living more simply.

I am so fed up with stuff.  Americans consume more and more "stuff" every day, and much of that "stuff" ends up in a landfill for the next 200 years.  I am not an environmentalist tree-hugger, but I believe firmly that it is our God-given responsibility to take care of the land that we call home.  And I am tired of seeing people waste money, resources, and energy to get "stuff".

I am not an extremely sentimental person, and I grew up in a family off self-proclaimed "tossers" (yet my parents still have a full basement, attic, and shed, but I digress), so simplifying and minimalizing come a bit easier for me than they do for others- as you can see by my streamlined counters.  But just think about how much of your time you waste looking through 10 lbs of stuff you don't want to find the one thing that you need.  Or think about what living space you can't use in your home, office, etc because you have too much stuff.  The Bible tells us to not lay up for ourselves treasures on earth, but to lay up treasure in heaven.  That thought has been very convicting to me this month.

Being newlyweds (4.5 months!), we don't have a lot of excess stuff lying around, but we do have some already.  I think when I realized that we had gone from enough stuff to fill my bedroom and his dorm room to enough to fill a 3-bedroom house in less than 6 months, and that once we get a bigger house that the same thing might happen, I really started to reconsider our "stuff".  We have no basement, attic, garage, or shed, so all our excess "stuff" takes up an entire bedroom in our cottage.  It bothers me that we can't use one room in our house, because we're using it to store a bunch of "stuff" that we may never use.  So my project this week is to make our 3rd bedroom usable.  It will be a big project since we're storing Christmas and other house decorations, Andrew's tools, and our suitcases in here, but I am looking forward to seeing what the end result will be.

How about you?  What do you need to declutter in your room, office, house?  Take the challenge to take one part of your life, whether it be a room, attic, cabinet, or even as small as a 'junk drawer', and declutter that part of your life.  Who knows- maybe you will like that so much that you decide to keep going!

Psst...one of my favorite bloggers addressed the issue of "stuff" and our duties to be good stewards of the earth in this post here.  She also has a great series on simplifying everything from your priorities to your kitchen to your Christmas.  Check it out!

Busy, Crazy Life

I took a couple week blogging break because my life was just too busy to try to squeeze in a blog post (or two or three) every day.  I thought life would settle down after a bit, but it hasn't.  A taste of life right now: working 30+ hours a week, youth staff at our church, playing for the Christmas cantata- as well as many other piano responsibilities at church, Andrew is taking 6 hours of grad classes and working 40+ hours a week, required school and church services (10 nights of them in one month), teaching piano to 3 new students, and cooking, laundry, cleaning, and everything else that comes along with life.  It's great, and I love it, but something had to give and it was le blog.

September is jam-packed, and October doesn't look much better right now.  November and December seem to be pretty empty (comparatively), but I shouldn't speak too fast.

Normal blogging will resume...soon.  I have some ideas of how to make it work- it's just a matter of seeing if my crazy life will let me do it!  Leaving you with a picture that Andrew and I took on our walk (yes, trying to find time for those!) last week (points if you can guess where we took it)...

Momentary Thoughts:

In honor of the fact that it's "Back to College Time" (at least in our neck of the woods), here are some random thoughts on the 5 things I couldn't do without as a college student.

1. A lot of comfy blankets- Even going to school down in hot and humid NC, I still loved my blankets.  They were great for cuddling up in and studying on those dark winter nights before finals!

2. Crates- I use these for everything.  One held all my piano books down in the music wing of the college.  Another couple stacked together worked great for a little bookshelf.  I put my printer on top of one and it made a great stand for that.  You can't go wrong with Walmart crates!

3. Plastic drawer caddy- This was great just to be able to have a piece of furniture that was all mine since I shared dressers and the desk with my roomies.  The one pictured is the one from my first couple of years at school.  I upgraded to a bigger one by my last year (read: I had a whole lot more stuff).

4. Camera- I have some of my favorite memories from my college years on my computer because I had a great little camera that I could use to capture them.  Seriously, don't leave home without it.

5. Vera Bradley- Ok, not the entire line, even though some girls might....  I *love* her Zip ID Case. Seriously, I still use one today, even though I'm out of college.  I could just put my cell phone in the zipper part, attach my dorm and car keys to the key ring, put my student ID in the window slot, and be off without having to lug a bag or purse around everywhere.  Today I still use it to hold all my keys and my driver's license.  It's amazing, and for $10 you can look cute too!
Those are just a few of my favorites from my college days.  Does anyone else have some good tips for what to take to college?

Rental Decor on a Budget – Office Renovation “After”

And now (drumroll please) the big reveal of our newly painted, rearranged office.  Keep in mind two things: we are still renting, so this isn’t nearly as customized as we would like.  We’re trying to save our pennies for when we get our very own cottage that we can make our very own.  This is just to tide us over until the penny jar gets filled up.  Secondly- we’re still working on it.  Almost every day I switch something around in the room that I think could look better.  It’s a work in progress.  But hey…isn’t all decor?

Enough with the blabbing- on to the pictures.

First- a remind of what the room looked like “before” our crazy project…
Office Before2 Office Before1

And now…here is the view when you first walk into the office.  This is our thrift store filing cabinet find.  We snagged it for $25 one Saturday and have had no problem filling it up since!  Our plans for this include changing out the handles and possibly restaining it to match Andrew’s desk.  The top of the cabinet is home to our quick filing folders, our receipt accordion file, our charging box, and occasionally some other miscellaneous things.

Andrew’s desk sits beside the files.  You can see the stain job really made it look more spiffy!  His shelves hold all of our office supplies very neatly, and the top generally stays uncluttered.  The corner holds some of our favorite pictures. (We use black frames in the office, brown in the living room, and white in the bedroom.)

Beside Andrew’s desk, our Bed, Bath, and Beyond Ottoman find ($15) is a great hiding place for owner’s manuals and extra cords.  It keeps everything nicely out of sight, but easily accessible.  We are in love with ottomans and are hoping to get a lot more over the years to use in many different parts of the house.  Our printer fits just right on the ottoman and it keeps it kind of down and out of the way- just the way we like it!  In the opposite corner, we have our lovely reading chair (read: camp chair covered with a blanket).  It’s cheap and works for us, plus it’s easy to fold up and move out of the way if we need to do that.  One of these days we’ll get a real comfy chair.  Behind that is my bookshelf.  Pretty basic- it holds books, my box of memorabilia from our dating days, one of my card boxes, a fan, and a couple picture frames.

Now on to my desk…  I love the way a couple coats of paint and some new knobs spice up an old desk.  It was a hand-me-down from our music pastor and I think it’s the perfect size and does exactly what I need it to.  Above my desk is my French bulletin board that I picked up at Big Lots before my freshman year of college for about $3.  I love the way everything stays up there without having to use pins.

And, finally, here is the non-descript entryway into the room. Along that same wall is a tiny closet that we use to store clothes, music, and other random things.  I hated having everything just sitting there, open to the rest of the office (which meant I actually had to keep the closet clean too!), so I found some fabric on clearance for $2/yard, grabbed a tension rod for $3, and using some iron-on fabric tape, made a great no-sew curtain panel.  We love it, and my favorite part is how well the color blends in with our other blue accessories throughout the room.

So, that’s it- our cute little office.  We love spending more time in there now, since it’s actually all neat and pretty.  It’s still a work in progress, but at least it’s headed in the right direction.  Thanks for coming along on this tour of our first home decor project!
